Exchanging Featured Instance and Pelennor Instance Armour
It is possible to exchange the 2-slot essence armour you get from Featured Instances for a different piece. It costs 15 Long-lost Coins to do a swap, and the swaps are somewhat restricted, but the box you get is Bound to Account and can be passed to other characters on your account.
Because the drops are class-specific and Bind on Acquire, it is possible to get a piece for the wrong class. You can exchange pieces that you got for ones that you can use. Also, if you get a piece that you already have, you can swap it to get one you need. It may take multiple swaps, but you can turn any piece into whatever piece you want.
You exchange a piece of Featured Instance 2-slot essence armour at the Featured Instance barterer in Bree (by the Boar fountain) or Minas Tirith (by the entrance).
WARNING: THERE IS NO WAY TO SELECT THE PIECE YOU ARE GIVING TO THE BARTERER (If you have more than one, it just picks one). IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE OF THE ITEM YOU WANT TO BARTER, BE SURE THE ONE(S) YOU WANT TO KEEP ARE NOT IN YOUR INVENTORY WHEN YOU BARTER. It will not take an item that is equipped, but it will take it from your bags even if it is locked. Check that it says 1/1 for the item you are giving; if it says 2/1, you have a second piece and it might take that one. The safest strategy is to put all your 2-slot essence armour into your vault except for the piece you want to barter, since you might also accidentally select the wrong barter line.
Although the original piece is bound to your character, the box you barter it for is Bound to Account, so you can pass it to another character. The box gives you one of two possible pieces of armour for your class. (The box automatically gives the piece for the class of the character that opens it.)
The Featured Instance barterer is more flexible than the Pelennor Instance barterer. You can exchange a piece for one of two different boxes, so you can get one of three different pieces of armour. For example, if you had a chest piece for the wrong class, you can swap it for a box that has chest and gloves or a box that has chest and boots. When you extract the piece from the box, you chose which piece you want, and it always is the one for your class. So you can turn that wrong chest piece into the right chest piece, or gloves, or boots.
Because of how they set up the boxes, you can turn any piece into any other piece, possibly with additional swaps (each costing 15 Long-lost Coins). In the above example, if you did the swap to get gloves, you can do another swap to get legs; if you did the swap to get boots, you can do another one to get shoulders. You need to do a third swap if you want the head piece.
Here's how they are arranged:
Azure | --- | Chest | --- | Crimson | --- | Hands | --- | Malachite |
| | | | |||||||
Feet | Legs | |||||||
| | | | |||||||
Amethyst | --- | Shoulders | --- | Marigold | --- | Head | --- | Obsidian |
Pelennor Instance Armour
The Pelennor barterer (Located by the entrance to Minas Tirith) is less flexible. Pelennor 4-slot essence armour pieces can be exchanged only for the same or one other piece. The swaps cost 6 Morgul Crests. If you have a piece for the wrong class, you can get the right class, or you have one option for an alternate piece. The boxes are also Bound to Account, so you can pass them to another character on the account and they have a choice of two pieces.
Chest | --- | Grave Dusted Box | --- | Head |
Legs | --- | Waterlogged Box | --- | Shoulders |
Feet | --- | Trampled Box | --- | Hands |
